AFRICA: EU To Invest €1Billion To Build Vaccine-manufacturing Hubs

The European Union (EU) plans to invest 1bn euros to build Covid vaccine-manufacturing hubs in Africa to reduce the continent’s current vaccine dependency on the West.

This was made known by EU president, Ursula von der Leyen at a summit in Rome, she also said the EU will donate at least 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccines to low- and middle-income countries by the end of the year.

One of the leading vaccine manufacturers, Pfizer/BioNTech also announced at the Rome summit that it would make two billion doses available at cost price to poorer countries over the next 18 months.

Ghana is being looked at as possible base of the vaccine manufacturing hub in Africa.
