KENYA: Police Arrest Fake Lawyer Who Won 26 Court Cases

A man accused of practising law without qualifications has been taken into custody by Kenyan police maintaining his innocence.

The man who goes by the name Brian Mwenda has handled 26 cases in front of Magistrates, Court of Appeal Judges, and High Court judges and won all of them.

Mwenda had been able to portray himself as a qualified attorney for some time according to the report, and judges had never doubted his abilities until his arrest.

The Rapid Action Team of the Nairobi Branch of the Law Society of Kenya arrested him on false pretences after they received a lot of public complaints.

The official account for the Nairobi Branch of the Law Society of Kenya, wrote on X, read: “The Branch wishes to notify all members of the society and of the public that BRIAN MWENDA NJAGI is not an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, from the Society’s records, neither is he a member of the Branch.” He is being held by the officials for further investigation’’.

The case has captivated the country, eliciting reactions from outrage to amusement. Despite his condemnation by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the country’s Director of Public Prosecutions, the alleged imposter has garnered some cult following in Kenya’s Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) as well as Mike Sonko, the controversial former governor of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi who posted a picture of Brian Mwenda and himself in support of the accused.

Brian Mwenda comment on the post: “I would like to convey my gratitude to the people that are supporting me and praying for me… in the fullness of time I will be able to clear this misunderstanding.
