GERMANY: Nine Injured As Turbulent Storm Forced Ryanair Emergency Landing

Nine people were injured after a Milan-bound Ryanair flight was forced to make an emergency landing in southern Germany because of heavy turbulence from a thunderstorm Wednesday night.

According to a statement by police in Bavaria, weather conditions prompted the pilot to initiate an emergency landing in Memmingen, about 113km west of Munich.

While the plane landed safely, nine people between the ages of two and 59 were injured in the air turbulence incident.

A woman sustained a head injury, her two-year-old toddler suffered bruises, and another 59-year-old woman complained of back pain, with all three receiving hospital treatment, according to police statement. Other injuries were treated on site.

The airline is organising a bus transfer to Milan because local aviation authorities did not clear onwards flights from Memmingen, police said

In a statement, Ryanair said flight FR8 from Berlin to Milan diverted to Memmingen on 4 June after experiencing some air turbulence.

The airline said the captain had called ahead for medical assistance and the aircraft landed normally.

“To get passengers to their final destination as quickly as possible, we arranged for alternative transport from Memmingen to Milan that night, as well as a replacement flight this morning,” the statement read.

“We sincerely apologise to passengers affected by this diversion.”
