Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has apologized after it generated a sexually explicit image of underaged girls in response to a prompt from a user.

In a response which appears to be another prompt from a user prompting an apology, Grok said it “regrets” the incident.

There are already well-founded concerns about AI technologies, the impact they are having on women and girls, could be ushering in a new era of misogyny. 25 percent of women have experienced harassment enabled by technology, including AI-generated deepfake pornography, according to a 2025 survey from the National Organization for Women (NOW).

There are also concerns about the bias of these technologies. A study from the Berkeley Haas Centre for Equity, Gender, and Leadership, analysed 133 AI systems from different industries and found that 44 percent showed gender bias.

And as AI-generated images become prolific online and the technology behind them becomes more sophisticated, it is becoming harder to spot what is an AI-generated image and what’s real.

Grok is being misused by users to create fake accounts to host, generate, publish or share obscene images or videos of women in a derogatory or vulgar manner.

In the UK, an MP has called for Grok to be shut down after it called him a “rape enabler”.

The Grok chatbot made the post on X about SNP MP Pete Wishart, after a user asked it to comment on the member’s opinion on whether there should be an inquiry into grooming gangs in Scotland.

Mr Wishart said he was seeking legal advice over the “deeply distressing” accusation and called for Musk to “recalibrate” the bot to shut it down.
