SOUTH AFRICA: Trump’s Tariff War Sends SA Fruits Export To China

South Africa has sought alternative market in China to avoid US administration’s high trade tariffs imposed on South African fruit exports.

The landmark, single trade agreement with China sees South Africa export five types of stone fruit – apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes to China instead of the US.

With this deal, South Africa have been forced to diversify its export markets and reduce reliance on Western partners.

This is the first time China has agreed to a single trade deal covering an entire category of fruits with South Africa, instead of negotiating individual fruits.

The final protocols are expected to be signed on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, which will be held in South Africa in November 2025.
