CALIFORNIA: Tesla Owners Sue Over Fraudulent Range Claim

Three Tesla owners in California has launched a proposed class action lawsuit against Elon Musk EV venture, alleging false range claims

The three owners filed a proposed class lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of California alleging that Tesla had created a secret “Diversion Team” in Nevada to cancel as many range-related service appointments as possible with owners, after becoming inundated with complaints.

The law suit also cited Tesla’s “attempts to conceal the defectiveness of its products after purchase” by rigging on board range gauges and using a team of employees to convince complaining customers that their cars are working fine. It also claims that the cars’ advertised mileage is intentionally tested in environments designed not to simulate real-world driving conditions but simply to maximize driving range.

Inspired by a Reuters investigation from July, which reported that Tesla formed a “secret team to suppress” complaints about driving ranges, Friday’s suit is actually the second of its kind. Another lawsuit was filed on Aug. 2 based on the Reuters report, claiming that Tesla had “grossly overvalued” the range of its vehicles to “prey” on its customers.

The complaint seeks class-action status to represent “all persons in California who purchased a new Tesla Model 3, Model S, Model Y, and Model X vehicle.”

The legal action seeks unspecified damages.
