The Brixton 02 Academy’s licence has been suspended as it emerged concerns were raised about the strength of the front doors nearly three years before a fatal crush at a concert headlined by Nigeria Afrobeat singer, ASAKE last week.

Scotland Yard has applied to have Brixton 02 Academy’s licence suspended temporarily citing “serious crime and disorder” at the venue after two people were killed in a crush at a gig.

Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, and Gaby Hutchinson, 23 have died following the incident while another 21-year-old woman remain in critical condition in hospital.

Interim measures being considered at Lambeth council chambers include restricting the venue’s capacity, extra stewarding, stopping alcohol sales, the removal of the designated premises supervisor or the suspension of the venue’s licence.

A Met spokesman said: “The decision whether or not to suspend or vary the premises licence will be made by a Local Authority Licensing Subcommittee.”

“The Met contend that the premises is associated with serious crime and serious disorder. A certificate signed by Detective Superintendent Daniel Ivey has been provided to this effect.”

“The council’s Licensing Sub-Committee will meet to consider immediate measures that need taking in relation to the venue, ahead of a full review of the premises’ licence which must be completed within 28-days.

The venue said its “heartfelt condolences” were with the victim’s family and friends.

“We continue to be devastated by this tragic situation and are fully supporting the ongoing investigation”.
