President John Magufuli has officially relocated the entire Tanzania government to the country’s new capital – Dodoma, a move scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.

Dodoma was last year elevated to city status but had been designated as the capital city by Tanzania’s founding president, Julius Nyerere in 1973 due to its central location, compared to the coastal city of Dar es Salaam is considered ideal for bringing government services closer to the people.

Moving the capital to Dodoma was part of Magufuli’s campaign promise when he ran for president and in fulfilling that promise, the president also moved his voting address to Dodoma.

“I was in Kitavi region, but I decided to come to my home city, Dodoma, to register my name because this is now my official address,” Magufuli told journalist.

The move started in 2017 with the prime minister, Kassim Majaliwa moving to Dodoma, it was followed by several ministries and the vice president Samia Suluhu Hassan, now the entire Tanzanian government now operates from the new capital.
