By Published July 10, 2019

It was indeed an awkward moment for Ethiopian runner Hagos Gebrhiwet who lost his leading spot in the 5,000m race at the IAAF Diamond League race in Lausanne, Switzerland and ended up in the 10th position.

With one more lap to go, Gebrhiwet slowed down towards the finish line only to realise the other runners were still running. On realising his error, Gebrhiwet, who was leading the race when the golden bell was rung, signalling the start of the final lap. He then tried to pick up speed but has lost momentum as the other runners overtook him.

"When I was leading I saw cameramen in front of me and I thought it was the end, I was confused. When I saw others pass me I started to run. I don't know how I finished the race, but this was an unfortunate event."

The blunder cost him the top spot, as he crossed the line in tenth place, with a time of 13:09.59.

Indoor mile World Record Holder Yomif Kejelcha won the race in a time of 13:00.56.
