McDonalds Women’s Day Honour Backfires On Social Media

In identifying with feminism on the international day of women last Thursday, fast food giant McDonalds flipped its famous arches upside down in some of its US franchise stores and on some of their social media platforms.

"In celebration of women everywhere, and for the first time in our brand history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women's Day in honour of the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere and especially in our restaurants," McDonald's Chief Diversity Officer Wendy Lewis explained in a statement.

"From restaurant crew and management to our C-suite of senior leadership, women play invaluable roles at all levels and together with our independent franchise owners we're committed to their success,” Lewis continued.

The act of cooperate feminism quickly turned tokenism and dubbed ‘McFeminism’ as people demand meaningful efforts like bridging the gender pay gap of McDonalds employees worldwide.

Many have joined the conversation by calling for McDonald's to pay their staff a minimum wage as a meaningful symbolic gesture beyond flipping their logo for one day in a year.

American Muslim lawyer and writer Qasim Rashid tweeted about the need for more women and minorities to be hired in leadership positions, while another suggested the franchise could try to offer "a career path forward in the face of automation".
