ITALY: Firefighters Arrested For Fire-starting To Receive Bonuses

Fifteen firefighters have been arrested in Sicily on suspicion of having started fires in order to receive bonus payments, police on the Italian island said Monday.

The volunteer firefighters based in southern Sicily were accused of starting fires in order to get paid to put them out. The alleged to have rang the emergency 115 number themselves or have friends or relatives to do it.

The team, in the Ragusa district, whose commander allegedly skipped shifts in order to start fires, came under suspicion from the local fire service authorities who had noticed abnormal number of interventions by the same team and launched an investigation.

Italian media report that 15 volunteers who earn €10 an hour have admitted starting fires deliberately.
