CHINA: Takeaway Drone Delivery Approved In Shanghai

By Published June 02, 2018

Takeaway food delivery in Shanghai has taken to the air with the approval delivery by drone along 17 routes in the Shanghai's Jinshan Industrial Park.

Food delivery service Ele.me, owned by Alibaba secured a permit to deliver takeaways by drone covering a 22.4 sq. mile area of Jinshan’s industrial park.

Over 100 restaurants operating in the industrial park can now deliver 20 minutes of orders being placed with staffs at the start point collecting orders and placing them into the cargo hold of the drone while staff at the delivery locations will pick up and deliver the meals to customer’s addresses.

Ele.me said the drone deliveries would substantially reduce its operating costs, compared with regular road deliveries.

Ele.me first trialled drone deliveries in September last year with the E7 drone model, which it says can carry up to six kilos of food and fly as far as 12.4 miles at a maximum speed of 40mph.
