BRAZIL: Judge Orders Netflix To Remove Movie Depicting Jesus As Gay

By Published January 09, 2020

A judge in Brazil has ordered Netflix to take down the controversial Christmas special that depicts Jesus as gay man.

Judge Benedict Abicair responded to a petition by Brazilian Catholic organisation that argued the honour of millions of Catholics were hurt by the continued streaming of the flick titled ‘The First Temptation of Christ’.

Two million people signed a petition calling for the film to be axed and the company behind its production Porta dos Fundos, had its office firebombed on Christmas eve.

In the ruling against Netflix, the judge said: "The right to freedom of expression... is not absolute".

‘’The withdrawal is beneficial not only to the Christian community, but to Brazilian society which is predominantly Christians’’.

Judge Benedicto Abicair’s decision is temporary and a final decision will be made by one of Brazil’s higher courts.

The ban is only temporary while a final decision is made and apply to viewers of Netflix in Brazil.
