AUSTRALIA: Fifty Ghanaian Accredited ‘Journalist’ Deported From Commonwealth Games

By Published April 05, 2018

About 50 Ghanaian journalists who flew to Australia to cover the commonwealth games were deported having failed to provide concrete evidence of their visit, although all the affected persons had the right accreditation to enter Australia.

Sports deputy Minister and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Chair, Pius Enam Hadzide denied any complicity in the incident, saying his Ministry did not sponsored the travels of the said journalists though they all had the GOC validation documents. .

“We did not sponsor journalists, we didn’t sponsor supporters, we didn’t sponsor anybody to the Commonwealth Games, we didn’t handle accreditation and for international tournaments, the ministry doesn’t handle accreditation,” he told Ghana’s StarFM online.

The denial comes after it was reported about 50 people, claiming to be journalists, had arrived in Australia, ostensibly to cover the Commonwealth Games.

The Australian authorities were not convinced that said ‘journalists’ were in Queensland to cover the commonwealth games and intend to return to Ghana after the games.

The deported journalists have since arrived in Ghana on Wednesday night.
